NEWSPAPER HEADLINES WITH COMMENTS

SUMMARY

  1. Screening of presidential candidates' files has begun at ELECAM. In 10 days, the list of qualified  candidates with regular files will be published after which those with grievances can then file them to the constitutional council which will rule on all such cases.
  2. Twenty (20) "Opposition" parties rally behind Mr. Biya. In the words of some of their chairmen, "We have tried hard in the previous years to beat him but we just can't. It is thus better to support him". Others say they would support him now so that after the elections they can together form a reconciliation government to restore peace and unity.
  3. While one faction of UPC led by Hon. Bapooh Lipot stands behind the CPDM, another faction represented by Habiba Issa Duala has deposited a candidature file at ELECAM. MINAT had earlier announced that only Hon. Bapooh Lipot could represent the party. Kah Wahla too sidelined in the CPP by MINAT's communique. Three affected parties intend dragging Minister Atanga Nji to court for abuse of power.
  4. Buea Diocese losses Rev. Fr. Alexander Sob. According to official news, Rev. was shot during an exchange of fire between the military and unknown gunmen around Muyuka in the SW region.
